Maaike Berbée is a radiation oncologist at Maastro Clinic / Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands. In her clinical work she mainly treats patients with GI tumors, including rectal and esophageal cancer. She is the co-chair of the Dutch working group for proton therapy in esophageal cancer. She was therefore heavily involved in the development of the Dutch indication protocol for proton therapy in esophageal cancer which uses a normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) model-based selection approach to selectively offer proton therapy to those patients who are expected to benefit from proton therapy. Her current research focuses on radiation strategies to increase the chance of organ preservation in rectal cancer.
